Quick Hits: Adrien Broner vs Mikey Garcia

This weekend was what was being treated as a potential match of the year between Adrien Broner and Mikey Garcia. Unfortunately, the match did not live up to any of the expectations set for it. On top of that, the televised undercard match, Jermall Charlo vs Jorge Sebastian Heiland, was also an awkward, uninteresting bout. Here’s some more in-depth analysis of this show:
Jermall Charlo vs Jorge Sebastian Heiland
  • This match was a one-sided affair dominated by Charlo. It ended up appearing like a very strong showing for Charlo who left Heiland knocked out and barely aware of his surroundings.
  • Nevertheless, a potential leg injury to Heiland left the results of this match a little tainted. It was unclear what occurred to Heiland’s leg, but it was clear that he was unable to move properly on it
  • Charlo looks like a top contender for a Middleweight title shot after this match, despite the leg injury from Heiland spoiling the match to an extent
  • Although Charlo does look like a contender, I am not convinced enough by this showing to say he deserves the winner of Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin. I could easily see those two going for a rematch after their bout in which case I would like to see Charlo take on a higher level Middleweight opponent like Billy Joe Saunders or Daniel Jacobs
Adrien Broner vs Mikey Garcia
  • To me, this match was very reminiscent of Canelo Alvarez vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. from a couple months ago. The match was a one-sided affair in which Broner, much like Chavez Jr., looked as though he didn’t want to fight back
  • Despite Broner’s apparent lack of effort at the beginning of the bout, this was still a showcase match for Mikey Garcia. Garcia was technically sound throughout the whole match and didn’t let Broner’s jawing rattle him in any way
  • Coming away from this match, I would look for Garcia to move up in weight to get to higher money opponents. It wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility to see him jump to welterweight where a possible showdown with Canelo Alvarez could ensue
  • Broner needs to seriously take a look at his career after this match. He looked horrible in this match with his only burst of offensive resulting from some questionably low body shots. I would say this puts Broner out of any title conversation for a long time at the very least

Overall, I had high hopes for this card and left somewhat disappointed. Although Mikey Garcia was incredibly impressive in his fight; it was not an exciting bout to watch. Hopefully though, something good comes from this fight and Garcia is given a bigger opportunity to shine in the near future.
