It's About Time WWE Makes The Next Great Faction

Just the other day, I was watching an episode of WCW Monday Night Nitro from 1998. It took place in the midst of the summer during the buildup to a tag team match between Hollywood Hogan and Kim Jong Un’s favorite basketball star Dennis Rodman vs Diamond Dallas Page and The Mailman Karl Malone. While I was watching, I remembered how fun I had always thought the NWO were. They were the original cool heels with nearly everyone in the audience wearing NWO Wolfpack or Black and White shirts. It’s been a little while now since WWE has given the audience something like that to cheer (or boo) for.
Just the other week was the three-year anniversary of Seth Rollins betrayal of Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose to disband The Shield. Since then, WWE has had a lack of factions that truly warp the wrestling landscape around them. Sure, we have had the New Day and the Wyatt Family since then but they pale in comparison to the dominance that was The Shield. I think it’s no coincidence that WWE keeps bringing up the disbanding of The Shield. It’s not uncommon for Seth Rollins to apologize again in his promos for stabbing his partners in the back or for Michael Cole to mention that Roman Reigns was the powerhouse of The Shield during one of his many main event matches. To me, this signifies that WWE is in a holding pattern trying to keep the memory of one of the most successful factions of the last decade alive due to the fact that people so often fondly reminisce about The Shield’s dominance.
With all this in mind, I believe it’s about time WWE gives the fans the next great faction to support or hate. Pro wrestling fans love a good faction running roughshod around the company and whether it be the Bullet Club, Sanity, or some new stable, I think it’s about time WWE finds the next NWO or Shield. If they did, I think we can all agree that it would just be too sweeeet.
