Alberto El Patron's Soap Opera Is Hurting Independent Wrestling

Recently, Alberto El Patron was scheduled to appear at a show in the Chicago area. Unfortunately for those looking forward to attending the show, and the promotion putting on the show, a scamming booking agent who allegedly had no connection to Patron led the promotion on. He was allegedly planning on taking money from the promotion and running off. While this isn’t necessarily El Patron’s fault, it just adds to the seemingly never-ending Soap Opera surrounding him. Patron has been at the center of the wrestling world, in one way or another, for months now. His incidents outside the ring and drunken rants against his former employer have brought embarrassment and shame to the wrestling world. He was stripped of his GFW Impact Wrestling title due to a potential domestic assault incident and has been the source of several controversies surrounding his independent wrestling appearances. It therefore shouldn’t come as a surprise that another scam or scandal has emerged around his name.

It’s no secret that the independent wrestling scene has experienced the loss of several major stars. WWE has snagged many of the elite talents in the indy wrestling world. It does not mean, however, that the indys are lacking star power. Cody Rhodes, Sami Callihan, Keith Lee, and more have all emerged as amazing standard bearers for independent wrestling. El Patron has been treated like one of those standard bearers. This is in spite of Patron’s inflammatory and offensive comments, his poor behavior in his personal life, and his several incidents of snubbing promotions. What Culture Wrestling even made him champion at one point only to see him ditch the show that was taking place the night after his title win. Now with this recent incident, whether it directly involved Patron or not, one has to wonder if it’s time for people to stop booking Patron and instead just book Rhodes, Callihan, Lee, or any of the other big names on the indy scene today. At this point, I don’t blame any of the promotions who have put their trust in Patron. They are just trying to promote their shows and wrestlers by bringing in someone whose name should attract attention. After this most recent controversy though, I am thinking that it's about time these promotions wise up. Patron is not worth the time or controversy. He will continue making a fool of himself and potential any of those who trust him. There's more than enough pointless, inane, characters still hanging on to the wrestling scene like Jim Cornette and Vince Russo. Let’s not add Patron to those ranks until he figures out a way to get his act together. He’s done enough damage to wrestling as it is, let’s not help him do more.
